HSBC is looking to change the roles of some staff to make the bank ’more efficient’ in the island.

The bank has confirmed it is in the process of restructuring some support teams but this will not impact on front-facing teams who work at the branch office in Ridgeway Street, Douglas.

Around 170 people work for the bank in the island.

The Examiner asked the bank to comment on speculation that as many as 80 people may be affected by the changes and also asked if it might involve redundancies.

A spokesman said they could not discuss figures but it was ’definitely’ not 80 and they also could not comment on whether there would be any redundancies.

The spokesman said: ’We are restructuring some support teams and a number of roles are changing.

’At the same time, we are also creating some new roles. Some colleagues’ roles are affected; we’re helping these colleagues to consider roles elsewhere in the bank.

’We remain committed to providing world class banking services to our Isle of Man customers.’

The spokesman acknowledged the bank ’really values our colleagues’ and every support was being given to those whose roles were affected by changes.

The bank was committed to customers ranging from island residents to businesses with international connections who do business with the bank’s commercial and corporate department. The aim was to ’make our operations more efficient’ while also looking to expand.

Businesswoman Sue Fox left her job as chief executive of Marks and Spencer Bank to run HSBC’s operations in the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands in February 2019. She is one of few female bosses in the banking industry and commentators say she is a role model for other women.
