Enterprising Kyle Caley’s daily trip to work is a real head-turner.
For Mr Caley, aged 20, goes out on the road in the driving seat of his own barber’s shop on wheels.
Just Barbering has only been in business for a few weeks but already his bookings are filling up nicely.
Mr Caley, who lives in Onchan, works from a converted Mercedes van equipped with top of the range fittings that include a barber’s chair imported from Italy.
He said: ’The response has been incredible, every time I’m out on the road people turn their heads to look.’
The budding entrepreneur, who trained at the London School of Barbering in Manchester, has been helped by the micro-business scheme run by the Department for Enterprise. He said: ’Helen, my mentor, has been fantastic and is always there to offer any help or assistance when I need it.
Mr Caley said that when he was training in the UK he was impressed by the number of mobile hair cutting salons and set his heart on starting a similar business in the island.
’I got my hair cut in one of the mobile barbers and I was very impressed. It appeared there was nothing like this in the island.’
Mr Caley, who attended St Ninian’s School, praised his stepfather, businessman Carl Underwood, for his invaluable assistance.
The van was bought from the UK shortly before the lockdown.
Mr Caley spoke to Business News from outside the premises of Whittaker Trading Ltd on Hills Meadow, Douglas, where he currently parks up on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. On Mondays and Thursdays he heads off for Cu Plas Callow on the Snugborough Trading Estate and on Wednesdays he can be found outside Motor Worx on the Isle of Man Business Park.
He said: ’Some of my customers have needed a proper haircut after the lockdown and business has been good.’
Mr Caley also offers home visits which can be booked as long as he can carry out a minimum of two haircuts, there is a flat space outside people’s homes, for obvious reasons, and a small power supply is available for him to plug into.
He is expecting to go live with a new app any day now to help with the booking process.
Foxy’s Garage on the Balthane Industrial estate, Ballasalla, worked on the conversion of the Mercedes van.
Shaun Fox, aged 56, said it had been a fascinating conversion job which he had thoroughly enjoyed being involved in.
He said: ’I sat down with Kyle and we worked through the job and he relayed to me his vision of what he wanted.’
