Two senior figures in the business community have been appointed as consultants at an island law firm.

Greg Jones joins DQ Advocates following a career spanning four decades with the accountancy firm KPMG.

He is joined by Barry Smith following 15 years as legal director for the Equiom Group in the Isle of Man.

As a partner, Mr Jones led the KPMG tax practice in the Isle of Man for 26 years until his retirement last month.

At DQ, he will be responsible for advising on both Isle of Man and UK taxation.

Mr Jones has specialised in corporate and business tax and advised on taxation matters, including international tax matters and treaty planning.

He said: ’I am delighted to have joined a firm with such professional strength and depth of knowledge, with a real commitment and modern approach to the landscape of legal and advisory services.

’DQ also has a continuing growing crop of talented young advisers who are encouraged to ensure they are educated across a number of disciplines, so I am looking forward to both pass on my knowledge and provide mentoring to them, as well as providing advice to our client base.’

Mark Dougherty, managing director of DQ, based at Mount Pleasant, Douglas, said: ’Greg is a fantastic addition to the DQ team - he has a superb reputation among both clients and peers across the globe for his work in financial services.

’His specialist knowledge will provide us with new insights and expertise to further strengthen the services we provide to our clients.

’His commercial and public-sector experience, as well as his track record of managing business growth and developing talent, will be hugely beneficial to DQ and I know we are all looking forward to his valued input.

Barry Smith brings 42 years of experience in the financial industry to DQ.

Before the Equiom Group he spent four years as an associate at another Manx practice.

Mr Dougherty said: ’I’m delighted to welcome Barry to our team. His range of expertise and the significant operational experience he brings will be an excellent addition to the services we provide.

’He has a wealth of knowledge and I am confident he will quickly become an invaluable member of the firm.’

Mr Smith will act as a consultant in his specialist areas of practice, corporate governance, trusts and due diligence, working specifically with the corporate and commercial and trusts, pensions and private client teams.

He said: ’I am absolutely delighted to be taking on this role and to be joining such a progressive and forward-thinking firm which places so much importance on offering high standards of client service.

’I’m particularly attracted by the variety of work and the excellent client base with such a well-respected professional services firm. I look forward to working with the whole team and continuing to build on its success.’
