One of the island’s most ’iconic’ shops is up for sale.

Caley’s General Stores in Sulby is being sold as a going concern.

The business has been a significant landmark on the TT course, at the Sulby Crossroads on the Sulby Straight for more than 70 years.

It was owned by Raymond Caley and his family for 60 of those years, serving the local community for generations.

Mr Caley died in February last year at the age of 76 and left the business and property to Graham Garrett, who worked with him for many years.

The shop business, building with accommodation and a plot of land with planning permission to build a house at the rear is for sale with Manxmove for £350,000.

It has been a regular stopping point for both competitors and biking enthusiasts alike over the years, who call in to say hello.

In a prime position by the church, pub and primary school, and on a busy crossroads, it is the hub of the Sulby community, being kept busy with all the regular customers and the passing trade.

Mr Garrett told the Manx Indendent his decision to sell was tinged with some sadness but ’I have decided to seek new challenges and do something else.’ Mr Garrett, who said he will be 54 in a couple of weeks time, said: ’I’ve worked here for 37 years, and Raymond Caley was a legend, he was Mister Sulby.

’He was like a second father to me.’

He added that four-time World Enduro champion David Knight likened him and Mr Caley as the ’Arkwright and Granville’ characters from the popular BBC comedy Open All Hours.

Mr Garrett lives in Ramsey with his wife Carolyn. He has two sons, Stephen, who now lives and works in Birmingham and Jamie, who is studying at Manchester University.

Mr Garrett described the shop as being like the ’hub of the community’ and people often stop by for a coffee and a chat while visiting the shop which is also a newsagents selling the Manx newspapers.

Even though times have changed, Caley’s Store still sells newspapers, milk and eggs but also loose fruit and veg and sweets by the pound.

Earlier this year a short film was released about the shop.

The fascinating film can be found on Culture Vannin’s website or search for ’Caley’s Store, Sulby, Isle of Man’ on YouTube.
