An accountancy firm has introduced a new ’forensic’ service for island residents and businesses involved in commercial or family disputes.

Ballasalla-based UHY Crossleys, known locally as Crossleys, now provides forensic accounting services to advise islanders who have concerns about personal or professional matters.

The work will utilise the team’s accounting, auditing and investigative skills to conduct an examination into the finances of an individual or business.

Crossleys director Nigel Rotheroe said the launch of the service is designed to help individuals, large organisations and international businesses.

He said: ’It doesn’t always follow but if you are feeling unsure about something, or you can’t put your finger on it yet your instinct is telling you that something doesn’t add up, or perhaps you simply require some reassurance, chances are you need a forensic accountant.

’Whether your situation surrounds a divorce, a will or a business dispute, we can offer specialist expert understanding and support, as well as someone to talk to about what is troubling you.

’We would urge locals to come and talk to us about their situation and we will provide a clear assessment that stands up to scrutiny in a simple, easy-to-understand manner - however complex the subject matter. Accountability is the driving force.’

The role of a forensic accountant is wide-ranging, from investigating alleged criminal activity such as fraud through to quantifying damages in civil litigation cases, trusts, probate, corporate valuations, working out assets in relationship breakdowns and financial elder abuse - where family members, business associates, carers or strangers take advantage of their trust and benefit from their resources.

The service is also particularly attractive to local advocates.

Mr Rotheroe added: ’So often, if people have an issue they will ultimately need to go to a lawyer or advocate. By offering forensic accounting, we begin that process by putting the foundation of a case together in easy to understand language before it is passed onto an advocate. That way clients can save themselves time and money and contribute to achieving the best possible outcome ensuring nothing is overlooked.

’As awareness spreads locally, we anticipate further demand and also expect a portion of our work to come from advocates who require assistance with cases.

’Forensic accounting requires a specific skillset and I have no doubt our work, led by Bridge Carter, our forensic investigation team manager, will develop into a well recognised brand for the legal profession.

’We have always provided litigation support, but this is a concept in its own right. This is an exciting growth plan for the business, a new string to our bow and an expansion of the professional services being offered under one roof.’
