Businesses involved in tourism will learn about the Equality Act this week.
The first phase of the law came into force on January 1.
The Act aims to protect individuals from discrimination, harassment and victimisation in both the workplace and the provision of goods and services.
For tourism business operators, this means that they will need to consider how the Equality Act affects them when delivering their services and /or if you employ people.
Rob Callister MHK, the politician with responsibility for ’Visit Isle of Man’, the government’s tourism agency, said: ’It is important for businesses to understand their legal obligations under the Equality Act and any process or operational changes that may need to be considered.
’This session is one of the many ways in which Visit Isle of Man supports the tourism industry and all businesses operating in the industry are encouraged to attend this session.’
Dawn Kinnish, government equality adviser, will talk tourism businesses about the law and what it means for their businesses as well as giving practical information on how to ensure their business meets the legal requirements outlined.
Ms Kinnish, who is an owner of a tourism business herself, said: ’I understand first-hand the needs and demands of the industry as well as the importance of ensuring all visitors receive a first class experience.
’As tourism businesses operating in the Isle of Man, it is important that we understand the diverse range of clients who access our services and that we recognise and respect those differences in order to maximise our customer base and offer a positive experience, right from the promotion to enquiry to booking and finally, the visit.’
The session will also be a chance for tourism providers to ask questions about accessibility and the law.
It takes place at the iMuseum, Kingswood Grove, tomorrow (Wednesday) at 6pm.
