On average, the pound in your pocket buys less than it did last year, according to the latest figures from government.

Last month, the island dipped into deflation, meaning that a basket of goods cost 0.3% less than a year earlier.

Now inflation measured by the consumer prices index has risen to 0.1%.

The contributors to the rise in prices included spending that comes under the heading of recreation and culture. It saw a 0.7% rise in 12 months.

But the biggest jump came from internet subscriptions, which shot up 13.7%. Pet care rose by 8.8%.

Oil and other household fuels were 31.9% cheaper than in June 2019. Oil and petrol for vehicles dropped 15.5%.

Both sea and air travel officially rose by 0.1%.

Inflation measured by the Retail Prices Index, which uses a different basket of goods and which is used to calculate the Old Age Pension, rose by 2.7%. A month earlier it was 0.2%.
