A new company based in Onchan is aiming to help Isle of Man residents cut their household bills and reduce carbon emissions on the island.

Smart Energy Solutions gives house owners and small businesses the chance to use a free online calculator which gives them a tailored solution to their property’s individual needs. If they want to take this further, the company can then provide a full energy analysis including thermal and infrared scans for accuracy.

’We are pushing to be carbon neutral in the Isle of Man. By doing that we’re saving the government and home owners a huge amount of money and helping the environment.

’We want to make the most difference that we can for people, for the least money,’ says Smart Energy Solutions co-founder, Jonathan Gower-Jackson.

Jonathan is originally from South Africa but has lived in the island for 15 years and was educated here. He and his team have put together the online calculator from scratch: ’It looks fairly simple but a lot of time and money has gone into creating the back end. Behind it is some serious data which we have collected.’

The company is already operating in the UK, where properties are energy rated. SES can carry out an energy analysis and show home owners what they can do to improve their energy rating.

Given that this might be through a major investment in something like an air source heat pump or a new boiler, Jonathan is keen to stress that SES takes no commission from third-party companies which sell these products, they simply charge for the more in-depth property analysis: ’We do not sell these products and we do not take any commission: that is our vow,’ says Jonathan.

He goes on: ’We know from experience how difficult it can be to get clear, independent advice on the best setup for your needs and that was our inspiration.

’It’s our aim to become a trusted first port of call for homeowners, businesses and landlords looking to reduce their energy consumption, cut their bills and their carbon footprint.

’We can offer people advice on the solution, both in terms of technology and finance, that would best suit their homes, properties and buildings and then signpost them to reliable and cost-effective experts to get the work done.’
