The quality of island life will once again be under the spotlight in a global survey of the best places to live and work.
The HSBC Expat survey is encouraging those who have moved abroad to share their experiences of island life.
Last year’s survey ranked the Isle of Man as the best place to live in the British Isles and the 12th best in the world.
The annual survey, the longest running independent survey of expats, announced that 92% of respondents who have relocated here felt safer and more secure compared to where they had previously lived.
This was nearly double the average (48%) of other countries on the league table.
While the survey is now in its 13th year, last year was the first time that it included the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey.
A spokesman said the islands fared extremely positively, with around three-quarters of expats across the three islands saying their quality of life had improved since moving.
Every year the annual league table survey, the longest-running expat survey of its kind in the world, collects the opinions of thousands of people around the world who have relocated. It explores many aspects of life abroad from pay and career progression to lifestyle, health, security and education. The findings include a ranking of the best markets and territories to live and work in and are published widely in global media.
A spokesman for HSBC said the results of this year’s survey will be published in June and it will be interesting to see if the Isle of Man can come top again.
John Goddard, Head of HSBC Expat, said: ’Hundreds of expats living in the Isle of Man and Channel Islands took part in last year’s survey, with the results suggesting that professionals moving to the islands maximise their career potential and enjoy rewarding life experiences.
’We are looking to build on that this year by encouraging even more local expats to take part and share their opinions and experiences, so that these insights can help others better understand what life is like in the islands and what it is that makes the islands such desirable destinations to live and work.’
Last year outdoor activities and a strong sense of community were among reasons listed as to why expats are staying in the Isle of Man longer than planned.
We reported Daphne Caine MHK, political member with responsibility for Locate Isle of Man, saying: ’It is clear that the quality of life we enjoy in the Isle of Man makes us an attractive destination for those looking to relocate to live and work, but it is also fantastic to see how competitive we are on a global scale in terms of political and economic stability, our wellbeing and family offering.’
HSBC’s survey focuses on economic stability, wellbeing and family benefits such as finance, education, healthcare and quality of life to give an insight into how countries compare across the globe.
It was open to those over the age of 18 who currently live away from their home.
