Insurance company Zurich International says it is the first Isle of Man business to switch to using compostable cups in vending machines.

Four of the latest hot and cold drinks vending machines have been recently installed by MannVend at Zurich International’s headquarters at Isle of Man Business Park on the outskirts of Douglas, where the company employs around 300 staff.

Peter Huber, chief executive officer of Zurich International, said: ’We’re committed to minimizing our environmental footprint and apply a continuous improvement approach.

’We have been using compostable water cups for a while, so switching to compostable vending cups is another step forward and we are delighted to have achieved this in partnership with an Isle of Man business.’

Both the vending cups and water cups will now be collected by MannVend and taken to a composting facility in St John’s.

Tracey Leahy, the managing director of MannVend, said: ’We’re delighted that such a high profile and respected business has decided to switch to using our compostable cups in the four stylish, hi-tech Coffetek Step vending machines we provide for them.

’We’re seeing more and more interest from our business clients in our compostable products, and with Zurich setting such a fine example we’re confident that more companies will be inspired to follow suit.’

Among other eco-friendly features the company’s office provides electric car charging points and a bike shelter.

Employees are also being encouraged to commute by e-bike.
