Campervan users are being urged to stop using public spaces in Douglas as makeshift campsites after concerns were raised during the Manx Grand Prix and Classic TT.

Douglas City Council and the Department of Infrastructure are working together to encourage visitors to use designated campsites instead.

The issue was raised after a resident of Queens Apartments contacted Manx Radio about a campervan and what was described as ‘an extension of their private living area’ spreading onto Douglas Promenade.

The resident claimed those involved had parked motorbikes on the promenade walkway and set out furniture, including tables and chairs, during the festival period.

Rather than immediately issuing fines, council wardens are visiting the area each day and placing information notices on the bikes.

In a joint statement, the DoI and council said: ‘Douglas City Council’s Community and Enforcement team is working in partnership with the Department of Infrastructure to encourage visitors to use one of the campsites.

‘Rather than issue fixed penalty notices, we always strive to inform visitors and wardens are placing information notices on the bikes and making visits each day this week.

‘In partnership with the DoI, the Council will next year look to purchase signage so it is clear no camping and/or camper vans are allowed.’

It is not the first time concerns have been raised about campervans using Douglas Promenade.

The DoI also took action over vehicles parking overnight there last year.

Notices were placed on vehicles suspected of breaching restrictions, reminding users of the regulations and warning about ‘disposing of foul waste into the surface drains which would cause environmental harm’.

A DoI spokesperson said in May 2025: ‘Parking restrictions remain in place on Douglas Promenade during TT fortnight, with the seaside available for only 16 in any 24 hours.

‘Concerns are raised with the department each year by accommodation providers, businesses and residents around the availability of parking, particularly for customers and guests, and the disposal of foul waste from motorhomes.’
