All the magic, mystery and fairytale of the Isle of Man has been pictured in a new exhibition, which opened at a local art gallery last weekend.
Manx artists Celia Kay and Rosie Wood unveiled their joint collection, called ’Magical Island’ at the Isle Gallery, on Sunday afternoon.
Despite having not met before, the two artists have combined their different approaches to capturing what they both saw as the celtic-inspired atmosphere of the island and the hidden treasures that are easily over-looked.
Celia said that she had been planning the exhibition for two years, and was originally planning to produce the work with another artists, but they had to pull out of the project.
Rosie was recommended to Celia by the gallery, and she said that they were surprised to see that, although they have contrasting styles of painting, their work shared a lot in common.
’I hadn’t met Rosie before. It was the Gallery that introduced us,’ said Celia.
’I had originally intended to produce the exhibition with another artist, but they were unable to take part.
’So the Gallery introduced me to Rosie, as they thought we shared the same ideas and inspirations.
’And, oddly enough, when we stepped back and looked at our work when it was on the walls, we realised how very harmonious our work was together.
’I was inspired by the surroundings and the landscape around us,’ Celia continued.
’Especially by the smaller corners of the island, the parts and places that you don’t really take notice of. ’The small details of the hedgerows, the rosehips and other little flowers that, I thought, really resonated and almost demanded to be painted.
’Rosie’s work is very much more avant garde, and completely different from mine.
’My work is more realistic, and impressionistic, without it being a photo-realistic painting,’ she said.
’But they work together very well, I think, and we are very happy with how the exhibition looks.’
Magical Island is open to view at the Isle Gallery until the end of May.
