Charities around the island have helped thousands of people struggling with poverty in 2018, and still the problem continues to grow.
Within the Christmas period alone last year, the Salvation Army in Douglas helped a total of 1,636 people who were in need.
Its annual Christmas Appeal saw 429 toy parcels and 1,144 food vouchers and hampers donated to people around the island. Approximately 63 guests were also served at the church’s special Boxing Day meal with the help of 30 volunteers.
Lieutenant Dylan Nieuwoudt, of the Isle of Man Salvation Army, said: ’Throughout a typical year at the Salvation Army we will continue to provide practical assistance to people who are struggling in the Isle of Man.
’Reflecting on the amount of consistent referrals made by professional and charitable groups to us, there clearly is an issue of poverty present.
’We strive to support those who find themselves in such times of need. Our vision is to share the gift of God’s transforming love with our community, not only for times of crisis but also for the long-term.’
The Salvation Army received referrals for its Christmas Appeal from health and care professionals, government agencies such as the Isle of Man College and prison, as well as from charities.
Housing Matters, which provides support to people facing an accommodation crisis, helped nearly 30 families within the Christmas season alone last year.
Katie Farrall, deputy manager at the charity, said: ’Going forward into 2019 our biggest concern is the lack of affordable properties in the Isle of Man.
’The lack of such accommodation presents challenges for families and individuals.’
The charity helped to provide presents to 59 children during the festive season. The presents were donated by The Lions Club, First Names Group and Barclays Bank.
’Any presents not distributed at Christmas will be used during the year to help with birthdays and other special occasions,’ she said.
’With the help of other local businesses, such as Davison’s Ice Cream, we can help families enjoy treats all year round.’
She added: ’During the summer we were able to help 12 families enjoy a fun day out which included transport, lunch and an activity. This was supported by Ramsey businesses.’
The Isle of Man Foodbank has seen and supported 271 clients since May 21 in 2018 and provided an average of 218 food parcels per month. This data represents an average of 112 adults and 107 children per month
’Since its inauguration five years ago, the Isle of Man Foodbank has seen its growth double year on year and 2018 was no exception,’ said director Neal Mellon.
He thanked volunteers and businesses which supported the charity during its ’very busy but successful’ Christmas period.
