One of the island’s longest established charities is facing an uncertain future - unless it can attract new members.

The Society for the Preservation of the Manx Countryside and Environment will hold its annual general meeting this week and is appealing for members of the public to consider getting involved.

Established in 1939 to help preserve and promote enjoyment and education of the island’s countryside, the society has made significant donations towards to a number of key community projects in recent years.

These include the opening of a new artificially grassed area and log-cabin classroom at Dhoon Primary School, the Ramsey Forest Project, the funding of island school children to attend Forest School and the purchase of Collins’ Bird, Flower and Butterfly identification Guides to schools and libraries throughout the island.

Now the Society will have to fold if it cannot recruit new volunteers, including some willing to join the charity committee. It’s asking anyone interested in finding out more to attend the AGM on Thursday, December 6 at Onchan Pensioners Hall (opposite Onchan library) at 7pm.
