Peel Charity shop has celebrated reaching the one million pounds mark in funds donated to charities.

The shop, on Peel promenade, held a coffee morning at the Corrin Hall to mark the occasion and handed over cheques for £2,000 each to 16 charities. Guests at the coffee morning were Chief Minister Howard Quayle, MHKs Ray Harmer, Geoffrey Boot and his wife, and MLC Tim Crookall.

Also present were two former chairmen of the charity shop, Jean Harrison and Trevor Ferrer with his wife Wendy, a former shop volunteer.

The charity shop was started in 2001 and has gone from strength to strength.

All the staff are volunteers and, apart from rent, rates and utilities, all money is distributed to good causes.

Among the charities who received £2,000 donations were Bowel Cancer Isle of Man, Age Isle of Man, Samaritans Isle of Man, Peel RNLI and Guide Dogs for the Blind.
