Heysham Port is currently closed as a result of a chemical leak.

Six fire engines from Lancashire fire service are currently at the scene of the leak, which is said to be nitric acid.

Crews from the service were dispatched to the port this morning following the incident just off Shore Road.

Nearby residents are urged to stay inside with their windows and doors shut while emergency services attend.

A spokesman said: ’We have six fire engines dealing with a chemical leak at Heysham Port this morning. If you live close to the port, please stay inside and keep windows and doors shut.

’The small leak involves a tanker containing nitric acid on land. We have firefighters now accessing the vehicle in gas tight suits to assess the situation. Port Way at the port is currently closed to all vehicles.’

It has been revealed by the fire service that a spill of nitric acid leaked from a tanker in the early hours of this morning.

Despite the closure, the Ben-my-chree sailed from Douglas bound for Heysham at 8.40am this morning.
