Chief Minister Howard Quayle has given his personal commendation to all the organisers and volunteers who pulled together to make this year’s TT a success, despite the challenging weather conditions.

’I give my personal thanks to everyone concerned for keeping the show on the road in spite of all the disruption caused.

’I think the TT was the real winner here and I was proud of the work that the organisers and marshals and public agencies and the community put in to meet the various challenges,’ he said.

’It was heartening to see the public rally around to help people who were caught by travel delays caused by the weather, with people around the island opening up their homes.

’There were also free showers offered at the NSC and members of the public often offered shelter for no charge. It shows the caring side of the island and the fantastic community spirit and it’s another reminder of what a special place our island is,’ he said.

During his usual weekly briefing with journalists he also reflected on the Grenfell tower block fire in West London.

Flags were flown on government buildings at half mast in respect for the victims of the disaster.

In addition, he said the island’s chief fire officer, Kevin Groom had written to the London fire commissioner, Dany Cotton, to express sympathy.

’There will be a public inquiry in the UK and I am sure the chief fire officer will be paying close attention to the report produced.

The Chief Minister added: ’If changes are required in the UK to the rules governing buildings with many occupants, then the island will follow suit.’
