Members of the Isle of Man Civil Defence team added to the jollity of Braddan Fun Day on Sunday with a display demonstrating their role.
Volunteers were on hand at the event to talk to people and explain some of the diverse activities undertaken over the years.
As well as promoting the organisation, they also hoped to recruite some new volunteers.
An important part of the team’s work over the years has been helping out with searches for people who go missing - sometimes in remote locations in the island.
Ian Young, emergency planning officer, said the team was particularly interested in recruiting some people who were able to take part in hill searches.
’We undertake a variety of tasks but we are keen to hear from anyone with an interest in getting out on the hills who is reasonably physically fit,’ he said.
In addition to hill searches, team members may be called on to do a range of other activities from setting up a rest centre for people evacuated from their homes in an emergency, or manning a catering trailer to support regular emergency service personnel during an operation.
Recently the team was involved in preserving and protecting the site of a helicopter crash on the hillside above the Creg-ny-Baa and maintaining a cordon around the site of an unexploded bomb.
During the severe flooding and heavy snowfall of recent winters, the Civil Defence volunteers were again at work setting up pumps to remove water, and helping people who became trapped in their homes during the extreme winter in 2013.
The volunteers also support a number of island events, including the annual parish walk when cover is given through the night.
Not all members will attend every call out, but will take part when they are able, as well as attending training nights each Wednesday in Douglas.
