The fifth annual Vision Awareness Week will kick off this year with the first Manx Blind Welfare Society Coast to Coast Walk.

Walkers of all ages, abilities and fitness levels are being encouraged to get involved, raising money for a good cause and enjoying the Manx scenery.

The family-friendly walk is on Sunday, September 9, starting on South Quay in Douglas and finishing at the House of Manannan in Peel.

There will be a second start in St John’s, offering a shorter route for anyone not able to complete the full 12 miles.

Manx Blind Welfare Society volunteers co-ordinator and events organiser, Debbie Thomson said: ’We’ve been really pleased with the amount of interest in the walk and are looking forward to getting going on the day. It is an all-inclusive event for the family to enjoy and dogs are encouraged.

’If anybody doesn’t feel up to the walk but wants to support us on the day, we would be grateful for any volunteer stewards to offer directions, support and refreshments.’

Vision Awareness Week aims to educate the public about the challenges faced by blind people in the Isle of Man and this year’s theme will focus on the importance regular eye examinations for children.

Mrs Thomson added: ’Registration closes at the end of the month - unfortunately you won’t be able to just turn up on the day. Finally, I’d like to say a big thank you to the Skywind Group for its generous support.’

Closing date for entries is August 31. Entry is £10 (under 16s £5). Register online at www.mbws.org.im, or see the MBWS Facebook page, or collect an entry form from the charity’s Corrin Court headquarters or its VIP shop in Strand Street, Douglas, or email [email protected].
