The coastguard was called last night after a driver got stranded on the bonnet of his vehicle as the tide came in on Glen Wyllin beach.

When the Peel coastguard got there the driver had made it a shore safely but the vehicle was now afloat and with the wind and tide taking it out to sea.

A coastguard spokesman said: ’As this would cause a shipping hazard so a coastguard swimmer made their way out to the vehicle and secured a rope to anchor it to the shore.

’Once secured the team stayed on scene to monitor the vehicle until the tide had turned and a safe recovery could be made by the owner.

’The coastguard would like to remind the public that driving on the the beaches around the island is prohibited and also dangerous as this driver found out to their cost.

’We would like to thank the staff at Glen Wyllin camp site for the cups of tea and the member of the public who brought us biscuits and water during the long night.-’
