The Mannin Cloak Appeal, organised by Zoe Thompson collected 1,311 for the #coats4Calais appeal.
Of the 1,311 coats, there were 486 ladies’, 426 men’s and 399 children’s and babies’ coats as well as two large bags of hats, scarves and socks, a bag of baby grows and wraps, a bag of shoes, three bags woollen jumpers and two bags of children’s clothes.
Mrs Thompson told the Examiner: ’I would like to say a massive thank you once again to the amazing response of the Manx people - 1,311 coats wow!
’These coats will make a huge difference to people who really need them.
’Whatever our thoughts on refugees, we are all human and the island again has shown what humanity and coming together can achieve.’
Most of the coats and other items of warm clothing will be going to refugee camps in Belgium or France, with some remaining in the UK going to Shelter, the homeless charity.
There are also nine bags of clothes that can be sold in charity shops, raising money for other needy causes.
First getting involved in wanting to aid refugees after watching news stories on television, Mrs Thompson says her desire to help people was strengthened following a visit to the refugee camps in Calais and Dunkirk.
Mrs Thompson also previously said that ’negative and ignorant’ comments made about refugees on a Facebook group made her decide that thinking about helping would help no one.
So she decided to put her energy into something positive and helpful.
Drop-off points had been at Noa Bakehouse in Douglas, Mother T’s, Balance Health Clinic and other addresses around the island.
Mrs Thompson added: ’So from me a huge thank you to everyone who donated, to Edward Bryan Removals for giving us space to sort bags and labels and for transporting everything over to #care4calais and to the team who came and help sort out the mountain of items - what a team!’
