Students from Annie Gill department at University College Isle of Man have raised £285, which has all gone towards a supply of toiletries that are being delivered to Ukranian refugees.

The Annie Gill Building is the part of the college which accommodates students with learning difficulties and disabilities, and was opened in 2013.

Teacher Heidi Danaher said: ’After the students learning about the crisis in college initially we thought about going to get a few packets of nappies and toothbrushes etc, maybe spending £30-40, but when we asked around at UCM there was an overwhelming support from other departments wanting to help out.

’Students collected the money then purchased the goods and then delivered them to Transmann to be shipped out this evening in one of their many containers.

’We were aware that some places had stopped taking donations and were grateful Transmann have stepped in.’

Students went along to the freight depot to drop the supplies off personally.

Douglas Council has also sent a vehicle and staff members to help load the ’tons’ of relief goods which have been donated form the island and are now being transported to the UK and onwards.

Council leader Claire Wells said: ’The situation in Ukraine is of grave concern to us all and the scenes we are witnessing are truly heartbreaking.

’As a council, we wanted to do our bit to help and are proud that so many members of our island have rallied support where they can by donating supplies for refugees displaced to neighbouring countries by the war.

’It has been a pleasure to work with the team at the Hubb and Island Express who are very committed to this project.’
