A Ramsey resident won a charity competition to name a loaghtan sheep nursed by Green Hills Animal Sanctuary.

Winner Diane McConnell had entered the name ’Lucky’ into the draw, which was randomly selected by the non-profit sanctuary in Sulby.

She later got to meet the young sheep which had been brought in to the sanctuary with a suspected broken knee.

Those who entered the competition paid £5 each for the charity to use towards veterinary care costs.

The newly-registered charity looks after a range of animals that have been abandoned or are classed as ’undesirable’ due to their appearance.

Caroline Cardona, a volunteer at the sanctuary, said: ’We do this for the love of the animals and believe they have a right to life.

’We have had animals for a number of years which includes horses, sheep, cats, dogs and poultry. Over the years the animals have found their way to us. Some are unwanted, some are prevented from slaughter, some are thrown out, some found in a bin, sheep mauled by dogs.

’We devote our time to looking after caring, feeding, nurturing, training the needs of each individual animal. Our sanctuary is helped along by the donations of others. The more we get the more we can save.’

The sanctuary is not open to the public currently due to a ’public liability aspect’ on the charity’s insurance as it looks after animals with problems, says Caroline.

’However what we will be offering is an event day where we come off site,’ she added.
