Councillors have expressed concern about plans to convert a disused old folk’s home into flats.

Members of the council’s Environmental Services Committee voiced disquiet about a lack of parking and inadequate area for bins in plans relating to the former Saddle Mews nursing home.

The plan was to convert and extend the building to create 33 studio flats and one two-bedroom flat.

Council Leader David Christian said he was concerned at the proximity of the new development to the existing over-50s flats. He said the new flats could well attract much younger people whose lifestyle could clash with existing residents, many in their 80s and 90s.

Councillors requested further information on waste and recycling provision.
