A concert is to take place in honour of one of the pioneers of women’s suffrage.
Sophia Jane Goulden, nee Craine, was born on the Isle of Man
She nurtured, encouraged and led her more famous daughter, Emmeline Pankhurst, into the women’s suffrage movement.
Tthe Isle of Man Federation of Women’s Institutes’ choir, Mraane ayns Arrane, is taking part in a concert for The Friends of Sophia Goulden, the charity that is raising funds to erect a statue of Sophia on the island.
It is joining forces with The Three Basses, accompanied by Eric Kelly, to provide an evening of musical entertainment on Saturday, July 21.
The venue is Christ Church, Laxey, and the concert starts at 7.30pm.
Soloist Karen Elliott will be accompanied by her husband John and Don Roworth will accompany the choir.
Choir member Su Collins will also contribute to the entertainment.
Admission is £7.50 which includes a light buffet.
Tickets can be obtained from the choir or from Shakti Mann in Ramsey, Celtic Gold in Peel, Peter Norris Music in Douglas and Thompson Travel in Port Erin.
It will also be possible to pay at the venue on the night.
There will be an opportunity to buy raffle tickets to support the fundraising.
The charity, Friends of Sophia Goulden, will be holding its annual general meeting on Friday, August 3, at 7.30 pm in St John’s Methodist Hall.
