Happy Valley in Port St Mary needs upkeep potentially costing up to half a million pounds, but who pays for it?

That’s the question being posed by the local authority.

Commissioners’ chairman Michelle Haywood explained the concrete posts holding up the covered seating area above the grass slope above Chapel beach are flaking.

’It has been happening for a while,’ she said.

’It will get worse. It’s almost impossible to drill it out, it will need something more drastic.

’A report done eight years ago said it would cost £250,000 to £300,000 or if we’re filling it in we would need to create a path or fill it with foamed concrete so there would be less weight.

’Some commissioners are adamant we keep it others think we should get rid of it because it’s where teenagers hang out and drink, we’re always clearing up broken bottles from there.

’We cannot leave it as it is. It will not get any less urgent. It’s unlikely there will be a sudden catastrophic failure. Heavy vehicles are stopped from driving above by planters. It is something that needs to be tackled.

’To rebuild it would cost £0.5 million. We need to try to establish who owns it and if there’s shared responsibility.’

At a recent meeting commissioners decided to investigate ownership through the deeds .
