Isle of Man Newspapers has temporarily suspended the door-to-door distribution service of the Courier.

This is in order to protect the health of the local community and that of the paper delivery personnel during the Covid-19 coronavirus outbreak.

As a result of this, we will be supplying your local shop with a supply of the Courier which will be available to collect when you are doing your necessary food shop during the lockdown period.

The Isle of Man Courier is a free weekly newspaper and is a trusted source of information within our community. This is why it is important that it is readily available for everyone, especially over the coming weeks as it will feature government advice.

This is a temporary measure and the traditional door-to-door service will resume at a future date.

You can also view the Courier online by visiting our website www.iomtoday.co.im and heading to 'Digital Editions’ to access your free copy from the comfort of your own home.

Isle of Man Newspapers would like to take this opportunity to thank our distributors for their commitment and professionalism through this difficult period.

We have 186 distributors from all walks of life and of all ages who deliver the Courier island-wide every week come rain or shine. They are a credit to our community and we look forward to working with them again in the future.

Thank you for your understanding and continued support.

NEWSPAPERS ARE SAFE

Scientists and health experts have confirmed that newspapers are not transmitters of Covid-19 owing to the ink and the printing process they go through.

Speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain programme, Dr Hilary Jones, said: ‘For public health information right now it's important people have access to information through newspapers.’

John Innes Centre virologist, George Lomonossoff, commented: ‘Newspapers are pretty sterile because of the way they are printed and the process they’ve been through. Traditionally, people have eaten fish and chips out of them for that very reason. So all of the ink and the print makes them actually quite sterile. The chances of that are infinitesimal.’

The World Health Organisation also confirmed that reading newspapers carries no real risk of catching the Covid-19 virus.

‘The likelihood of an infected person contaminating commercial goods is low and the risk of catching the virus that causes Covid-19 from a package that has been moved, travelled, and exposed to different conditions and temperate is also low.’
