A Douglas teenager has been fined £400 for being drunk and disorderly.

Logan Ryan Ellwood was arrested after being abusive to police at a taxi rank.

Magistrates also ordered the 19-year-old to pay £125 prosecution costs.

Prosecuting advocate Harry Bellis told the court that police were on patrol at Victoria Street in Douglas on August 9, at 2am.

They saw Ellwood and described him as agitated and shouting at members of the public.

When officers spoke to him they reported that he was slurring his words, unsteady on his feet, and had glazed eyes.

He refused to engage with the police and said he didn’t want to speak to them.

They escorted him to the taxi rank, to facilitate him getting into a taxi, but he began swearing, saying that the police didn’t need to be with him.

Ellwood was warned about his behaviour and told to get in a taxi, but he continued to be argumentative, saying: “F*** off.’

The teenager was subsequently arrested.

He is already subject to a 12 month probation order, imposed in March, for supplying cannabis.

Defence advocate Paul Glover asked magistrates to deal with the new offence by way of a financial penalty, saying it had been dissimilar to his previous offence.

Mr Glover said that there had been an incident between the defendant and another party earlier, which had left Ellwood in an emotional state.

‘It was the classic mix of emotions and alcohol,’ said the advocate.

‘His frustration boiled over.’

Mr Glover said that Ellwood had spent time in police custody as a result of his arrest, which had given him time to reflect on how he had reacted.

The defendant, who lives at Lheannag Park, will pay the fine and costs at a rate of £10 per week, deducted from benefits.
