A couple from Glasgow have been fined £900 each for disorderly behaviour at the Bridge Inn.

Christopher Smith, aged 43, and forty-one-year-old Diane Helen Knox, were involved in a scuffle with bar staff after a glass was smashed.

They both pleaded guilty to the offence and were also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs each.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that the couple were drinking at the pub on Douglas quay on June 21, with work colleagues.

As the pub was about to close, a ‘play fight’ was said to have started, during which a glass fell from a table and smashed.

A barman asked the group to stop, as they needed to clean the table.

However, Knox was said to have approached the barman and put her hands on him, grabbing him by the shoulders and back.

They were asked to leave, but Smith became involved and was said to have punched the staff member.

Knox then grabbed the barman around the back of the neck and pulled him to the floor.

Smith was said to have ripped the male’s shirt in two and caused scratches to his chest.

The couple were moved outside by the group.

After being arrested, Knox, who lives at Dundasvale, said: ‘A glass was smashed and the barman got angry.

Smith, of Wilton Street, said: ‘If someone does something to my missus I’ll react.

‘The guy behind the bar was out of order.’

Duty advocate James Peterson represented both defendants and handed in letters of apology on their behalf.

Mr Peterson said: ‘They accept entirely that they’ve overreacted, and there were many other ways to deal with the situation.

‘They are genuinely sorry for their actions.’

Knox agreed to pay at a rate of £50 per month, while Smith will pay £100 per month.
