A 30-year-old Ramsey man has admitted drink-driving and dangerous driving after his car ended up on its roof.

Stephen Paul Binding also pleaded guilty to having no driving licence or insurance.

Binding is already due to be sentenced at the Court of General Gaol Delivery on April 22 after he previously pleaded guilty to wounding with intent, wounding without intent, and property damage in relation to a separate incident on September 12.

He has also previously pleaded guilty to two counts of theft.

Deputy High Bailiff James Brooks committed the driving and theft offences to April 22 so that all the offences can be sentenced together.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that Binding was driving a Vauxhall Vectra on the main road going through Kirk Michael on August 4 at around 7.15pm.

A witness who was driving his van said that Binding was travelling behind him and beeping his horn but he didn’t know why.

He said that Binding began to overtake on a straight in between Kirk Michael and Ballaugh, but a Mini was coming in the opposite direction.

Binding attempted to pull back but the rear of his Vauxhall Vectra hit the van.

He lost control of the Vectra with it going onto a grass verge, then flipping over multiple times before coming to rest on its roof in the Ramsey-bound carriageway.

Binding had a passenger with him and both men received treatment from paramedics at the scene.

Binding, who lives at Mooragh Promenade, said: ‘I can’t drive. I’d been drinking all day.’

A blood sample was taken which later produced a result of 102. However, a back calculation found that the reading at the time of driving would have been not less than 150.

The legal limit is 80.

On January 16 last year, Binding was arrested after he was seen trying car doors in Ramsey.

A witness reported that a toolbox and an angle grinder were missing from his shed.

When police found Binding he was standing under a streetlight with an opened bottle of wine and a toolbox on the ground next to him.

A second witness said that his garden gate had been left open and darts had been removed from a dartboard in a yard.

Defence advocate Deborah Myerscough asked for a probation report and a psychiatric report to be prepared before sentencing.

No bail application was made and Binding is remanded in custody in the prison.
