A cocaine smuggler has lost an appeal against his jail term.

Christopher Paul McDougall, 35, was jailed in July this year for a total of 11 years and seven months after admitting seven drug trafficking offences and one of possession.

He pleaded guilty to importing 250 grams of cocaine in a secret compartment in his car as well as 1kg of cannabis resin with a combined street value of more than £30,000.

This offence was committed in January 2018.

He also admitted being concerned in the trafficking of £177,500-worth of cocaine and cannabis in May 2018.

McDougall appealed against his sentence, his lawyer Paul Rodgers arguing that Deemster Cook had failed to take adequate account of the ’totality’ of the 2018 and 2019 offences and the starting points for both were too high.

He said the Deemster had failed to allow any discount for personal mitigation - the lack of relevant convictions before March 2018, his behaviour on remand and the references from family members, friends and former employers.

But the appeal court ruled that the sentence was not manifestly excessive.
