A mechanic from Douglas has been fined £1,100 for four motoring offences.

Robert John Scott pleaded guilty to careless driving, having no insurance, having no vehicle licence and having a vehicle in a dangerous condition.

Deputy High Bailiff James Brooks also endorsed the 35-year-old’s licence with 11 penalty points.

Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court how police had found Scott’s Audi parked on Drury Terrace on September 19. The vehicle tax had expired in August 2019.

He was given five days to produce insurance documents but failed to do so.

The 35-year-old initially pleaded not guilty to the offences but changed his plea to guilty on the day of the trial.

On May 5 Scott, who lives at Clifton Terrace, was seen by police driving on the Mountain Road near the Black Hut.

He was said to have driven onto a grass verge before going back onto the road.

Police waited for him at the Creg-ny-Baa and followed him but lost him at Hillberry because of his speed.

The vehicle was later found parked on public land at Clypse Moar Farm with the number plates removed and a number of defects.

He was requested to attend police headquarters on a number of occasions but failed to do so and was subsequently arrested.

During a police interview Scott told police he had only taken off the plates because they were hanging off.

Defence advocate Jane Gray said that, on September 19, her client had only recently purchased the car.

Ms Gray said that the court proceedings had taken their toll on Scott’s mental health and he was very unlikely to be before the court again.

Deputy High Bailiff Mr Brooks fined Scott £400 for having no insurance, £400 for careless driving, £150 for the tax offence, and £150 for the condition of the vehicle. He must also pay £800 prosecution costs due to preparation work done for a trial.
