A drunk man who fell into the sea on Peel beach has been fined £150.

Callum Robert Mathieson-Nelson admitted being found drunk in a public place and was also ordered by magistrates to pay £50 prosecution costs.

Prosecuting advocate Rachael Braidwood told the court that police were called on September 7 at 4.30pm after a member of the public reported that a naked man had fallen into the water on Peel beach.

When officers arrived they found Mathieson-Nelson walking towards Shore Road, topless, but wearing wet jogging bottoms.

He was described as confused and unsteady on his feet.

The 27-year-old, who lives at Honna Road in Port Erin, was arrested due to concerns for his safety.

Defence advocate Sara-Jayne Dodge said: ’On the day of the offence, Mr Mathieson-Nelson had been drinking since midday. He had four or five pints after a very long shift.’

The advocate said that her client was a support worker for people with autism.

’It is a responsible job and he was letting his hair down,’ said Ms Dodge.

’He had argued with his girlfriend and went to the beach, then ended up tripping and falling into the water.

’He had a wet top so he took it off.

’He was polite to the police. He was not arrested for being disorderly or aggressive. He was arrested because he was on his own and there was no-one there to take him home.’

Ms Dodge went on to say that her client had self-referred to Motiv8.

The court heard that Mathieson-Nelson has previous convictions for alcohol-related offences but nothing for four years.

Magistrates ordered him to pay the fine and costs at a rate of £100 per month.
