A 31-year-old Douglas man has admitted an assault causing wounding after punching a man outside Jaks pub.

Callum Thomas Radcliffe’s victim suffered a gash on his head which needed five staples.

Radcliffe, who lives at Mona Drive, was committed to the Court of General Gaol Delivery for sentencing after magistrates deemed to the assault too serious for summary court.

Prosecuting advocate Barry Swain told the court that the victim was outside Jaks bar, near the entrance, on Loch Promenade in Douglas at 3am on November 13.

Radcliffe was also there and was seen on CCTV footage punching the man, causing him to fall to the ground hitting his head and becoming unconscious.

After being taken to Noble’s Hospital he received five staples to a wound in his head.

Radcliffe was initially charged with disorderly behaviour on licensed premises but this was replaced by the more serious charge of assault causing wounding.

Defence advocate Kate Alexander submitted that, although the punch had been intentional, the wound was a knock-on effect.

Ms Alexander also pointed out that the victim had admitted being intoxicated which may have contributed to him falling over.

The advocate submitted that the case was just suitable to remain in summary court and asked for a probation report to be prepared before sentencing.

The court heard that Radcliffe is on licence in relation to a sentence imposed in May for a similar offence.

After taking into consideration Radcliffe’s previous convictions, magistrates declined jurisdiction and committed him to the higher court, where he will appear on January 28 next year.

Bail continues with a condition to contact probation.
