A 31-year-old plumber has been sentenced to 80 hours’ community service after a bar room brawl with a window fitter at a club.

Darren Noel Dooley had previously denied disorderly behaviour on licensed premises, but on Tuesday changed his plea to guilty.

He was also banned from buying or being sold alcohol for six months.

We previously reported that window fitter Ryan Benjamin James McCurrie, aged 25, of Hazel Crescent, Pulrose, was sentenced to 60 hours’ community service after he admitted disorderly behaviour on licensed premises.

The two men were at Bordello, a nightspot on Loch Promenade, on November 7 when punches were exchanged between them after they had initially exchanged words.

When asked how drunk he was, Dooley, who lives at Spring Valley Road in Douglas, said ’five out of 10’.

Defence advocate Ian Kermode asked the court to follow the recommendation of a probation report, for a sentence of community service.

Mr Kermode asked the court to not activate a suspended sentence to which Dooley is currently subject.

’Mr Dooley doesn’t drink alcohol very often, hence why his judgement was impaired on this occasion,’ said the advocate.

Mr Kermode handed in nine letters of reference as well as a letter of apology from his client, and asked the court to spare Dooley a ban on entering licensed premises as he said this would inhibit his ability to work.

High Bailiff Jayne Hughes gave Dooley credit for his guilty plea, even though it had not been entered at the first opportunity.

She said: ’It is clear from the references you have an extremely good work ethic and skills that would benefit the community.’

He was also ordered to pay £300 prosecution costs due to work done towards a pre-trial review after his initial not guilty plea. He will pay the costs at a rate of £50 per week.
