A teenager has been jailed for 20 weeks for five offences committed over three months.

Morgan John Ritchie pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer, property damage, burglary, theft, threatening behaviour and cannabis possession.

He has already served the equivalent of a 14-week sentence while on remand.

We previously reported how, on August 7 at 5am, night staff were working at the Co-op in Ramsey while it was closed.

One staff member was outside on a break when he said Ritchie, who is 18, approached him and asked if he could use his phone to call a taxi. The man told Ritchie, who is currently residing at Tromode House, that he had no credit and the teenager walked off.

Ritchie, who was with another male, was then seen talking on a phone.

The staff member went back into the Co-op but at 5.12am Ritchie entered the shop and was seen on CCTV footage putting a 70cl bottle of vodka under his jumper before leaving.

He was later arrested and when interviewed by police handed in a prepared statement claiming he had been allowed to enter the shop but making no comment on the theft of the vodka. He was charged with burglary.

Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court how, on September 4, police spoke to Ritchie while he was with two other males beside a damaged vehicle.

He ran off but was caught, then spat in the direction of an officer and pulled on his radio until he was eventually restrained using Pava spray. He was charged with threatening behaviour.

On October 13 police were called to the number three bus on Glencrutchery Road in Douglas after receiving a report of a drug deal taking place on the bus.

Police boarded the vehicle and Ritchie was identified.

He told police he had ’weed’ in his pocket and produced 6.6 grams of cannabis, later valued by police at £198. During an interview the teenager admitted possessing the drug but said he had no intent to supply.

He was charged with possession of cannabis.

Prosecuting advocate Ms Cubbon told the court how another offence had been committed on November 8 when police were called to an incident at Snugborough in Union Mills.

Ritchie was arrested for an unrelated matter but then kicked a police officer in the groin and leg.

Once at police headquarters he refused to leave a consultation room, then struggled with officers and broke a police radio headset.

He was charged with assaulting a police officer and property damage.

Defence advocate Jane Gray said that Ritchie, who is 18 and was last living at Tromode House, had a difficult upbringing which had impacted his mental health.

Ms Gray said that he suffered from anxiety and depression and used a range of illegal drugs to self-medicate.

’He has become institutionalised,’ said the advocate.

Ms Gray said that there were limiting sentencing options as her client was not well enough to undertake community service and asked the court to consider the time served on remand.

She added that there were concerns about where he would live upon his release but said he had friends he could stay with.

Deputy High Bailiff James Brooks sentenced Ritchie to 14 weeks custody for the police assault, four weeks for the burglary, one week for the property damage and one week for the cannabis possession, all to run consecutively, with no separate penalty made for the threatening behaviour.

No order for prosecution costs was made.
