A 41-year-old man has admitted shoplifting from Peel Co-op on two occasions.

Stephen Gerrard Arrowsmith stole blue WKD drink and wine from the store in Michael Street.

He admitted two counts of theft and will be sentenced on December 16 after a probation report has been completed.

Prosecuting advocate Hazel Carroon told the court that Arrowsmith, who lives at Christian Road in Douglas, went into the Co-op on October 15.

He bought four cans of cider and was given a carrier bag.

However, Arrowsmith then went back to the alcohol area and put two bottles of blue WKD, valued at £5.50, into the bag before leaving without paying for them.

On October 18 Arrowsmith was back at the Peel store and this time put a bottle of wine, worth £8.75, into his jacket, then left without paying.

He was later arrested after handing himself in and when interviewed by police said he couldn’t recall being in the Co-op but said that he was intoxicated so he accepted the evidence.

Arrowsmith was said to have returned to the store after being released by police and paid for the items.

Defence advocate Peter Taylor said that his client was due to finish community service in relation to a previous offence on October 1 but had been unable to complete the hours because of ill health.

Mr Taylor said that his client went to the police station after hearing police were looking for him, and made a full admission.

’It’s clear he struggles with alcohol and it was due to alcohol he committed the offences,’ said the advocate.

Mr Taylor asked for a probation report to be prepared before sentencing and an update to be given on his client’s community service.

Bail continues.
