A top Scottish lawyer is to give a lecture in the Isle of Man next week.
The Caroline Weatherill Memorial Lecture, which takes place on Thursday, November 2, at the Manx Museum lecture theatre, is a free event open to the public as well as members of the society.
This year’s guest speaker is Lord Hodge QC, a Scottish lawyer and Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. Before this role, he served as a senator of the College of Justice, and sat in both the Court of Session and High Court of Justiciary in Edinburgh.
Lord Hodge also sits on the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, the court of final appeal for Crown Dependencies and UK overseas territories.
For the Law Society event, he will be delivering a talk titled, ’Judicial Independence in the United Kingdom: The Lessons of the Brexit Litigation’.
The annual lecture was established in 2007 in memory of Caroline Weatherill, a senior associate with Dickinson Cruickshank, who died at an early age in 2006.
Douglas Grant of sponsor Conister Bank, said: ’The Isle of Man Law Society is the oldest Manx professional body, and Conister Bank has been operating since 1935; there is a commonality in our both having served the Island’s community for many years. We are delighted to lend our support to this event and look forward to fascinating insights from the guest speaker.’
The Caroline Weatherill Memorial Lecture takes place at the Manx Museum from 5pm to 7pm, with refreshments served from 5pm. To reserve a place, email [email protected]
