An investigation into why a bus rolled backwards down a hill and caused extensive damage is still continuing.

The bus rolled backwards through a junction and caused significant damage to two properties, a van and a gas mains pipe.

The incident happened on Saturday, July 28, at about 8.55am on Hillberry Road in Onchan, at its junction with Highfield Crescent.

The single decker, which was empty at the time, is one of Bus Vannin’s Mercedes built silver buses.

As the company is government-owned, the Manx Independent contacted director of public transport Ian Longworth for an update on the crash.

Mr Longworth said: ’There will be no statement on the bus crash until the investigation is complete and any court action has passed.’

However, a statement at the time of the crash from a Department of Infrastructure spokesman ruled out any fault with the bus itself.

He said: ’Isle of Man Transport is fully confident with the safety of the buses and this incident was not due to any mechanical issues.’

Fortunately, no one was injured in the crash. It happened on a Saturday morning and the junction was clear. The driver, who was not on the bus, was not hurt.
