A charity event will see one man cycle 8,848 vertical metres up Ballakilpheric - which is the equivalent height of Mount Everest.

Robert Moneta, from Bikestyle in Douglas, will be cycling the road above Colby around 70 times over a period of 24 hours to raise funds for Cruse Bereavement Care.

Members of the public are welcome to watch his efforts tomorrow (Saturday 29) with refreshments and food being available from Train Smokers from 12pm to 4pm. Children can also be entertained by a bouncy castle on the day.

Robert will begin his gruelling task just before sunrise. The creators of the Everesting concept, regarded as the most difficult climbing challenge in the world, are Andy van Bergen and Hells 500.

The rules of the challenge are: pick any climb, anywhere in the world, and ride repeat, after grinding repeat until you have notched up the vertical metres all in one go.

The Ballakilpheric ascent is hoped to take around 11 to 12 minutes. Depending on the conditions, and how he feels on the day, Robert would like to complete the challenge within 24 hours.

He will be supported by business SAS Events, which promotes island cycling.
