A fundraising day in memory of a much-loved Douglas man, who died from bowel cancer, has raised more than £5,000 for the island charity which fights the disease.
The ’Remember Jay Fun Day’ was held for Jamie Carr, who was known as Jay, and was just 35 when he died in December 2016 after a short battle with the disease.
Jamie was a devoted father to Josh and Grace. He had worked for Lloyds Bank since he left school.
The day was organised by friends and family members Brian O’Riordan, Dean Gough, Mark Blakemore, Steph Crellin and Anita Cairney, who are now aiming to make it an annual event.
The day, at Ballafletcher sports facility on Saturday, was raising money for the charity Bowel Cancer Isle of Man.
Activities included a fancy dress five-a-side competition, bouncy castles, a bowel cancer awareness stand, and a children’s fancy dress competition.
Steph Crellin, who is Jamie’s sister, said: ’The day was a huge success. We could never have imagined it would be such a well-received and well-attended event. We really couldn’t say how many people came as the whole place was packed throughout.
’The five-a-side tournament went really well with 16 teams competing for the Jay Carr Memorial Trophy. The eventual winners were ’The Carrot Tops’, a little nod to Jamie having ginger hair. Jamie’s mum, Anne Wood, presented the trophy.’
Between 2008 and 2014, 492 patients were admitted to Noble’s Hospital with a diagnosis of bowel cancer. Sixteen of the diagnosed cases were detected through the island’s bowel cancer screening programme which started in July 2011.
If you are aged 60 to 75 and are currently registered with a GP practice on the island you will automatically be offered free screening every two years.
If you are aged over 75 you can request a free screening kit by calling the freephone number 0800 707 6060.
If you are aged under 60 and have any concerns, you should discuss this with your GP or practice nurse. For more information about Bowel Cancer Isle of Man visit hwww.bowelcanceriom.com
