Commuters could face disruption for four weeks from today (Monday), when part of Quarterbridge Road in Douglas is shut.

The closure of the carriageway between the Quarterbridge roundabouts and Alexander Drive junction is to allow work on pavement reconstruction to continue.

The Department of Infrastructure says contractor Island Drainage and Groundwork Ltd will have to close part of the road because its narrowness and the proximity of the Quarterbridge roundabouts means it is impracticable to use temporary traffic lights and allow two-way traffic.

From 9am on Monday, February 1, Quarterbridge Road will be made one way between the roundabouts and a point just south of the junction with Selborne Drive until Sunday, February 28.

This will mean that:

* Southbound traffic that would normally use Quarterbridge Road will be diverted at the bottom of Bray Hill via a signed route (Tromode Road, Ballafletcher Road, Braddan Road and then onto Peel Road and back to Quarterbridge).

* The junction of Quarterbridge Road with Alexander Drive will be closed. Traffic that would normally travel down Alexander Drive will be diverted via a signed route (Devonshire Road, Selborne Drive and on to Quarterbridge Road).

* The junction with Quarterbridge Road and Devonshire Road will remain open but traffic will be able to turn right towards Bray Hill only.

* Brunswick Road and Cronkbourne Road junctions will remain open.

* Traffic from Johnny Watterson’s Lane will be diverted via a signed route (Ballafletcher Road, Braddan Road and then onto Peel Road and back to Quarterbridge.

Following completion of this phase the contractors will complete the final section of new footways in the central section of Quarterbridge Road (vicinity of Selborne Drive junction) immediately afterwards.

It is planned that this section will be carried out under two-way temporary traffic lights.

Work has already begun on the pavement between Brunswick Road and Selborne Drive.

During the time that the footpath element of the scheme is being completed, a team from the Department will be undertaking works in preparation to overlay the road surface the entire length of Quarterbridge Road.

The resurfacing of the road will be undertaken in March and will be the subject of a further public update giving details of the traffic arrangements that will be put in place.

A letter is being sent to households on Quarterbridge Road that are directly affected by this work, giving details of how residential access will be maintained while the paving works are under way.

People can also contact the contractors directly on 851681 with specific inquiries.
