A documentary about Mountain Circuit racer Tom Weeden has received a major boost after it was chosen to feature on the Amazon Prime service.
Road of Giants, made by Josh Clague and Joe Callister of 2020 Media, followed Tom from his memorable Manx Grand Prix triumph in the Senior in 2016 up until the start of the 2017 TT. After Tom suffered - and recovered from - a serious crash in the Supersport race at the 2017 TT, the documentary added in his return to the Festival of Motorcycling later that same year.
Already well-received, earlier this month the documentary it was selected to feature on the online giant’s flagship streaming service, opening it up to a huge audience.
’It has done quite well,’ said Josh, a graduate of the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts.
’It has been a really interesting marketing process, because Amazon Prime opens it up to a massive market of millions of people.
’We are seeing exponential growth in terms of the number of minutes which it is streamed for. It is nice to see the work getting there.’
Road of Giants gives a close-up view of life on the road racing circuit and has been hailed for the way in which it showcases the daily realities of road racing, the father-son relationship between Tom and his dad Steve, and the amazing camaraderie in the paddock.
It has been a busy year for former St Ninian’s High School pupils Josh and Joe. As well as released their first documentary the pair, who were friends at school, also found themselves working behind the scenes at the touring Dinosaurs in the Wild event, that took them to Birmingham, Manchester and London.
Dinosaurs in the Wild, from the creators of the BBC’s Walking with Dinosaurs, combined elements of a theme park, the theatre and science to give visitors a prehistoric experience, featuring animatronics and live sets. It has proven to be a huge hit.
As their stint ensuring the walkthrough attraction runs smoothly comes to an end, Josh said it had been hard work but enjoyable.
And it was not without its interesting and surreal moments.
’It is a strange feeling to have quite a realistic triceratops looking you in the face first thing on a Monday!’
He added: ’It is full on. We are the standby crew on show days. You have to stay relatively sharp and look after lots of different aspects: sound, lighting, videos and animatronics.
’There is always something that you might need to go and sort if it goes wrong.’
Josh trained in theatre and live performance lighting, while University of Derby graduate Joe has a degree in sound, light and event technology.
Tom Weeden is in the island this week to compete at the 2018 Festival of Motorcycling, having notched up five finishes at this year’s TT.
