Film-makers Josh Clague and Joe Callister plan to document one of the darkest moments in Manx history.

Their next project is to make a film about the Summerland tragedy.

Josh said they wanted to create an accurate historical record in film format. The project has received support from the Arts Council.

Fifty people died and many more were injured when, on August 2, 1973, the original Summerland complex burned down.

Last year’s Grenfell Tower disaster in London brought fire safety in large buildings back into to spotlight. The BBC is making documentary series about Grenfell and the lessons to be learned, while also considering other historic disasters, including Summerland.

Josh and Joe assisted with that, but they are working on a full documentary that will be solely about Summerland.

It was important to record the information now for future generations, said Josh, and to do so in an accessible format.

’We are interviewing different people letting them tell us their story,’ he said.

’I have long had an interest in it and Joe has too. We thought it would be good to put out something that is published in video form. That people can view alongside other documentation.

’It is a documentary project and a fact-finding mission to get people’s stories. There are still people whose stories have not been told.’

The aim is to complete the majority of interviews before the end of this year and have the documentary out some time next year.

Josh said that anyone who wanted to tell their story of the Summerland disaster could get in touch with them via the 2020 Media page on Facebook.
