A woman who was told she didn’t have breast cancer when she did has written a book about her experience.
Carolann Bruce, aged 51, now lives in Stockport but was born in the island and grew up here. She began to write about her dreams she was experiencing nine years ago.
Carolann was told by doctors in England that she didn’t have breast cancer at the age of 41. But her dreams prompted her to challenge their diagnosis.
She said: ’I had been having scary dreams for a while, but this dream showed me as a cancer patient. Everything was so real that I checked myself when I woke up next morning and I found a lump.
’I had a negative mammogram and a consultant said the lump was nothing to worry about, but I insisted on further tests.
’He assured me that all was fine, but I refused to budge. I knew I had to have those tests. I’m glad I did because the doctor was wrong. I had cancer.
’Most people would have accepted the diagnosis and gone away, only to find out the truth when it was too late. But I’m stubborn. I just knew my dream was true.’
Carolann said that she had been writing throughout her ordeal, which eventually become her book, ’The Dream That Saved My Life’.
She said: ’When we had the first lockdown, I wrote it all up over about three months and it became the book.’
She’s convinced the dream was a warning and is urging others to challenge doctors and clinicians if they feel unsure about their diagnoses.
’I’ve not really had an apology from the doctors, except for that first day when they scanned me and saw the cancer was present. I didn’t complain, but I made sure I was given the test due to my stubbornness,’ she said. ’I wouldn’t be here now if it wasn’t for that. Unfortunately, misdiagnoses are still happening.
’People need to know their bodies - be aware of your body and if you’re not happy with what doctor are saying, challenge them. It can help stop unnecessary deaths.’
The book is on sale February 4.
