A 27-year-old Douglas man has been fined £150 after admitting being found drunk in a public place.

Jacob Leonard Martin Lane was found by police sitting on the walkway on Douglas promenade.

He was arrested after police were unable to find anyone to look after him.

Prosecuting advocate Rebecca Cubbon told the court how, on November 12 at 7.30pm, police were called by a member of the public who said they were concerned about a man who was drunk on Douglas promenade.

Police found Lane and spoke to him. He was said to be unsteady on his feet but was initially just sent on his way. However, shortly afterwards another member of the public called police expressing concerns about Lane.

This time police found him sitting on the ground on the promenade walkway.

He could not recall his earlier conversation with police and was said to be unfit to leave alone.

Police could find no-one at his home, on Empress Drive, to look after him so he was subsequently arrested.

Defence advocate Sara-Jayne Dodge said that her client had been out drinking after work and had ended up staying out longer than normal. Ms Dodge asked for credit to be given for Lane’s guilty plea and said that he was ashamed and embarrassed.

Deputy High Bailiff James Brooks also ordered Lane to pay £125 prosecution costs, which he will pay, along with the fine, at a rate of £30 per week.
