A careers fair at Ballakermeen High School provided students with an opportunity to explore the various options available to them upon completing their full time education.

Almost 1,000 students ranging from year 9 (13 to 14-year-olds) to year 13 (17 to 18-year-olds) were given the chance to talk to 60 businesses and services from across the island.

Assistant head teacher Mark Redmayne said the event, now in its second year, is to provide ’aspiration for many of our students who may not be aware of the island’s diversity when it comes to employment and careers’.

He added: ’This year we had representatives from the likes of the uniformed and care services, insurance, accountancy, law, IT, UCM, engineering, banking, media, hospitality, construction, utilities and government public services.

’It was a phenomenal response from the community.

’The exhibition was just part of a wide curriculum of careers education and guidance that takes place throughout the year at Ballakermeen. Careers assemblies, work experience, vocational qualifications, classroom lessons and special days delivered by Junior Achievement all contribute to the programme.’

Isle of Man Newspapers was represented by Emma Mann and Grace Burns.

Mr Redmayne thanked the companies and services that took part. To sign up for next year email [email protected]
