A children’s nursery has pledged to do what it can to protect the island’s natural resources.

It has been made a ’partner’ of Biosphere Isle of Man.

The promise means that it aims to help to develop the economy sustainably and to make a positive environmental impact wherever possible.

Geoffrey Boot MHK, Minister for Environment, Food and Agriculture presented the pledge certificate to the Hopes and Dreams Nurseries’ owners, Gary and Laura Peirce, at their base in Mooragh Park, Ramsey.

Mr Peirce said: ’We have been reducing the natural resources we consume, and we’re proud to be involved with the government’s "Green Loan" initiative. The initiative has replaced the lighting in our nurseries with energy-efficient LED lighting, which has reduced our operating costs and the need for replacement and disposal of bulbs.’

The nursery is going to replace all plastic toys and children are now using bamboo drinking cups, and lunch menus contain more local produce to support local suppliers and limit food miles.

There are also plans to replace all existing vehicles with electric ones.

Mr Boot said: ’I am pleased to welcome Hopes and Dreams Nurseries as a partner of Unesco Biosphere Isle of Man. The organisation is making excellent progress embracing sustainability in its settings and services and in encouraging our youngest citizens to take an interest in and get out into the natural world.’
