Code Club, a local charity that teaches people how to use digital technology in the Isle of Man has announced two new courses starting this month.

Digital literacy is defined as an individual’s ability to find, evaluate, and clearly communicate information through typing and other media on various digital platforms.

The group aims to provide a focal point for people of all ages to develop coding skills, share their knowledge and experience, and teach others how to leverage the technology that surrounds us.

They do this by organising classes in various programming disciplines, fostering cooperation amongst software developers in the Isle of Man and providing events of interest for people passionate about technology.

The new classes are entitled ’Exploring Electronics’ and ’Unity for Beginners.’

Exploring Electronics is a science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) course based around developing circuits using Arduino microcontrollers.

The course will focus on using practical applications to explore STEM concepts and will run on Fridays between 6pm and 8pm starting on September 24.

The second course, Unity for Beginners will help attendees learn the fundamental techniques in Unity development. Unity is a powerful and professional cross-platform engine used for game developments, virtual reality (VR) experiences and many other applications.

These classes will run on Saturdays between 4pm and 6pm starting on September 25. Besides these two new courses, Code Club will be continuing their drop-in sessions at the Eagle Lab in Douglas every Saturday between 4pm and 6pm, where there will be a range of activities designed to teach coding skills and explore emerging technologies like 3D printing, VR and Internet of Things (IoT).

IoT describes the network of physical objects, or ’things,’ that are embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies that is used for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the internet.

Owen Cutajar, chair of the Code Club committee said: ’We are delighted to be able to run courses once again and my thanks go out to all the volunteers who make Code Club the success it has become. We’ve been tremendously lucky to be in a position to make an impact on growing minds and give back to our community.’
