Students at Anagh Coar School have been encouraged to look at different ways they can be healthy inside as well as on the outside.

A range of activities at the school marked Children’s Mental Health Week, which ran from February 4 to 10.

This year the Douglas School focused on mental health charity Place2Be’s theme, which is: ’Healthy: Inside and Out’.

The week kick-started with a special assembly which looked at topics of healthy eating, physical exercise and good sleeping patterns.

It was discussed throughout the week that everyone, including students and teachers, needs to reflect and recognise the things they do that help them to stay happy and mentally healthy.

This was highlighted in ’show and tell’ sessions which were organised for all classes in the school.

The children had the chance to develop their speaking and listening skills while telling their classmates about their special item and how it makes them feel happy.

Rob Coole, head teacher, said: ’It has been a lovely opportunity to celebrate all the special things that make our children feel happy and for the teachers and children to get to learn something new about each other.’

He added: ’It has been great to see the children speaking confidently about their special items in front of an audience.’

Place2Be is a UK charity that provide emotional support to schoolchildren.

According to a survey of more than 1,100 10-11 year-olds and 13-15 year-olds carried out by the charity, 56% of children said they worry about at least one thing related to their school life, home life or themselves.

Those getting less sleep were less able to deal with their worries and said they often don’t know what to do when worried.

Place2Be launched Children’s Mental Health Week in 2015. It aims to support children who suffer from mental health related issues such as students struggling with bullying or bereavement.
